Sachio Fujioka was born in Tokyo in 1962 and from the age of 16 studied conducting with both Kenichiro Kobayshi and Akeo Watanabe. In 1990 he moved to the UK on taking up post-graduate studies at the Royal Northern College of Music in Manchester, where he was the first holder of the Sir Charles Groves Conducting Fellowship.
Sachio Fujioka was Assistant Conductor of the BBC Philharmonic Orchestra between 1992 and 1995. Following his very successful debut with the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra at the Suntory Hall in Tokyo in May 1995, he was appointed as a regular guest conductor and now returns to work with the Orchestra on a number of occasions each season.
Following his debut with the BBC Philharmonic in November 1993, Sachio Fujioka has appeared with the Orchestra on many occasions including his debut at the at the BBC Proms in London and he has also made a number of recordings with this Orchestra for Chandos Records.
Between 1995 and 2000 Sachio Fujioka was Principal Conductor of the Manchester Camerata and conducted many concerts with the Orchestra in their new home, the Bridgewater Hall. In the 1998/99 season he and the Orchestra undertook a highly successful tour of Japan including appearances at Suntory Hall, Tokyo.
Recent/future engagements have included return visits to the Japan Philharmonic Orchestra, the Bournemouth Symphony, BBC Philharmonic, Swedish Chamber Orchestra and Mr Fujioka continues to be a regular guest with the key Australian orchestras. He also conducted a production of Britten's Turn of the Screw with Opera de Oviedo with much success and was immediately re-appointed to return in 2009 for the production of Ariadne auf Naxos, where he again performed with much enthusiasm to claim the hearts of opera lovers, and was immediately re-appointed for the third time to return in 2014 for the production of Madame Butterly.
Sachio Fujioka has made a number of recordings of music by the distinguished Japanese composer Yoshimatsu on the Chandos label. In 2001, Sachio Fujioka was appointed Principal Conductor of the Kansai Philharmonic Orchestra in Osaka.
